The Mountain-Ear welcomes interns

NEDERLAND - The Mountain-Ear hires students from the local high schools, local homeschooled students, and college students who are interested in our internship program.

The Mountain-Ear staff hopes to share their knowledge, skills, and experience of journalism with the students. The interns always share their knowledge and skills as well.

In a very fast paced high tech environment connecting multiple generations is vital to sustainability.

It is thrilling to have three interns at The Mountain-Ear. Two of them attend Nederland Middle-Senior High School (NMSHS) and one is a student at the University of Colorado Boulder. We love the perspective the high school and university students bring to the table.

Macaela Ball is a student at Nederland Middle-Senior High School.

Macaela tells us that she is “born and raised in gorgeous Coal Creek Canyon.” She attended Coal Creek Canyon K-8 and then transferred to NMSHS in 2024.

When she has time Macaela enjoys outdoor activities and surrounding herself “with the beautiful local nature.”

When asked why she applied to be an intern Macaela said, “I decided to apply for an internship with The Mountain-Ear to help encourage younger residents to make sure their voices can be heard.”

Macaela will be helping to cover the news in Coal Creek Canyon, at NMSHS, and Nederland.

Libby Chandler is a student at Nederland Middle-Senior High School. She has lived in Nederland all her life. She says, “I love the close community and beauty the town has to offer. My favorite things about Nederland is the uniqueness and the nature of the area.”

Libby is active in extracurricular activities like cross country, track, soccer, theatre, and skiing. She loves to read, go hiking, listen to music, and bake. Libby is even working on writing short stories and screenplays.

She has always had an interest in journalism and community and remembers growing up reading The Mountain-Ear.

Libby is excited for this internship opportunity to “become a better writer, learn new skills, and be a part of something I am passionate about.”

Libby will help with news around NMSHS and the Nederland community.

Lila Nuttle lives in Boulder and attends the University of Colorado Boulder. Lila is majoring in economics and journalism with a minor in political science. That sounds exciting for any young journalist!

In her free time Lila enjoys running, biking, and spending time with her dog.

She says, “I’m excited to be an intern at The Mountain-Ear and get to know my local community better!”

Lila is wanting to cover a variety of events in the community to broaden her experience and writing skills.
