The Mountain-Ear receives a precious gift

Shae Harrower, most recently from Nederland, is an artist who finds value in the nomadic lifestyle. She says, “My heart just seems to know where to go,” much like when she’s practicing her art of pen and ink, body paint, and murals.

“I suppose all art feels great though. I think we were all meant to create in one way or another. It brings a certain type of peace and connection,” confesses Harrower, who learned the love of art by watching her mom and grandmother create.

She also credits the town of Nederland for being “monumental in supporting me and helping me grow as an artist. Very Nice Brewery, Harvest House, Wild Bear Nature Center, and now The Mountain-Ear have given me huge opportunities I am so grateful for.”

Harrower shares, “What’s more is that these people believed in me before I believed in myself. Barb was the same. I had never done a landscape and was nervous I wouldn’t be able to pull it off. Barb Hardt seemed to know I could and repeatedly told me so.”

That kind of support is something Harrower finds invaluable for anyone trying something new, stating, “The new experiences, especially the challenging ones, are where we grow.” Harrower painted the mural at the paper’s office in Nederland.

A photo the late Barbara Lawlor took while working for The Mountain-Ear inspired the mural. Harrower mentions, “Barbara was a beautiful part of our community! She always had a camera in her hand and was incredible at capturing the magic that is our little town. She is a warmth that is missed and cherished still.”

Harrower has aspirations to create art while on the road but says she has been busy “doing a whole lot of living.” She also claims in a perfect world, she would love to paint more murals. She’d also like to spend some time as a tattoo apprentice.

The foliage details of the mural were delicately crafted with rolled-up The Mountain-Ear pages. Harrower wasn’t sure the technique would work, but it did. She proudly says, “And it worked beautifully!!!”

Though Harrower is on the road again, a part of her and Lawlor remain in Nederland at The Mountain-Ear’s office.
