The exotic charm of Germany in Vail

From previous Discover Colorado columns, you might recall that I’ve been lucky enough to have spent a couple of years in Europe, including Germany. My time abroad was a life- changing experience and one that taught me more about myself than anything else. Cultures of the world are wonderfully unique and each one offers something truly special.

Yet, there is something extraordinary that occurs when two cultures intertwine. I was heading to one of my favorite mountain towns in the Centennial State, Vail. It’s also the home of a fourth-generation German family running a breath-taking hotel, the Sonnenalp. Cautiously, I approached the vehicle entrance and spoke to the kindest valet, who paved the way for all the magical moments I was about to experience.

The truck was parked, I walked and found myself speaking to two remarkable human beings, with whom I ended up spending over an hour. After touring the premises and checking in, I took the elevator to the third floor. As I walked down the hallway, I saw two 19th-century articles titled “The Quarts Mill City of Black Hawk” and “Central City Fire,” which accelerated the sensation of being home.

I found my room and dropped my bags by the bed. I rushed to the balcony, where the sights and sounds of Vail Village greeted me with open arms. A short while later, I was enjoying a delicious dinner with two of my most cherished friends at one of the three restaurants on-site, the Bully Ranch. Little did I know, as I was treating my tastebuds to a mouthwatering meal, a robe, slippers, fresh water, and a special treat were being delivered to my room.

The evening ended with a warm soak and an adult beverage. I’m uncertain if I ever fell asleep because, from the moment I pulled up to the hotel, it all seemed like a dream. Morning came quicker than I would have liked, but breakfast was as incredible as dinner.

A spa that’s fully equipped with a gym, a pool, hot tubs, steam rooms, bars, restaurants, views, activities, and, in my opinion, magic all make this establishment the ideal destination. From the initial greeting to the decor and the last smile I received, it’s impossible to pinpoint my favorite moment or person.

Should you ever be inclined to witness firsthand the ultimate definition of European hospitality, American convenience, and the best both worlds have to offer in customer service, this is where you go. Never have I known what it’s like to be treated like royalty. That’s until I stepped inside the Sonnenalp Hotel in Vail, Colorado.
