TELLURIDE — Pickers Drew Emmitt of the Left Hand String Band and Vince Herman of the Salmon Heads joined forces for a New Year’s Eve gig in Crested Butte in 1989. Coming up with the name “Leftover Salmon” on the way to the show, they suspected they had something special, but neither of them knew just how fateful that initial collaboration would be and how it would determine their career paths.
Leftover Salmon’s mixture of bluegrass, rock, country, and zydeco immediately struck a chord with listeners and they developed a loyal following. Their music was labeled as progressive bluegrass as they led a slamgrass/jam band movement in Colorado and across the nation that continues to this day.
The Telluride Bluegrass Festival is one of their favorite places to perform. Leftover Salmon’s first appearance there was in 1995. They have delighted audiences at the festival many times since then. Drew Emmitt has not only been there as a founding member of Leftover Salmon, but also once before with Left Hand String Band. If Sam Bush is “The King of Telluride,” then Emmitt and Herman are its princes.
It has become tradition for everyone to holler “Festival!” at the beginning of Leftover Salmon’s Telluride shows to set the mood. For their 22nd appearance at the venue on Friday, June 19, former Nederland resident and local music hero Vince Herman was as congenial and entertaining as ever. After a few songs, he invited Sam Bush and his fiddle onstage to join them.
An epic jam ensued for over an hour. Every number an enjoyable experience, the time flew by and was over before you knew it.
In the midst of a tour that includes half the states in the union and a December date in Puerto Morelos, Mexico, Leftover Salmon is scheduled to appear at the Rhythms on the Rio Music Festival in Del Norte, Colorado, beginning July 30. They will perform at the Dillon Amphitheater, Dillon, Colorado, on August 7 and 8.
