Tall Grass
Wind over the tall grass
breaks the country silence ~
Like the waves of ocean blue
it rides across the green…
On a weather-beaten fence post
perches a western meadowlark.
Bright lemon-yellow…
wearing a black necklace, it sits
singing its distinctive melody.
Quickly the bird dives
into the tall grass…
as I pass by.
Friend of jumping mouse ~
it searches for an insect.
As part of God’s creation,
I take watchful steps
to walk beside the tall grass.
All is quiet ~
Except for my heart, a meadowlark
And wind over the tall grass.
