According to the Oxford English Dictionary, expression is the process of making one’s thoughts or feelings known. But does expression always require words or body language?
Art has redefined the meaning of expression, as proven by artists like Jen Molochnick. For seven years, she has been expressing herself through clay. Art is not only a way Molochnick shares her story. It’s also something she likes teaching others.
“I enjoy teaching beginners how to throw on a pottery wheel and spend much of my time in the studio sharing what I’ve learned with others.” Molochnick creates “functional and fun ceramic pieces to be used in daily life.”
For Molochnick, creating ceramic pieces that are hand-built or thrown on a pottery wheel is a small part of the artistic journey. She shares, “I enjoy making art that people can use and not just look at on a wall.”
Some believe art is also a way to hide one’s thoughts or feelings. If so, this action alone is also a way of expressing one’s ideas and emotions. So, does expression only require verbal and physical communication?
No, it does not. An artist will reveal thousands of thoughts and feelings through creation. One must only observe to experience them.
Jen Molochnick’s home studio is located in Black Hawk. You can find her on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/JenMoloPottery80422 or you can give her a call at 720-412-9255.
