Heather Kegel’s maternal great-grandmother and paternal grandmother were both painters. One of her aunts is a mixed media, fiber, and collage artist. With several artists in the family, it’s no surprise art runs in Kegel’s blood.
Kegel’s home studio is her four-season sun porch. She says it’s small, but she makes do. “I have a ton of natural light from three walls of windows and two skylights. I glaze-fire all my work at the Boulder Potters’ Guild because the kilns there are much larger.”
While creating, Kegel says she listens to podcasts or audiobooks because they help her focus “far better than music.” She has spent the last year learning how to fire the new salt and soda kiln at the Boulder Potters’ Guild, sharing, “This kind of kiln is way different than the electric kiln I usually use, so there has been a huge learning curve.”
In 2015, Kegel graduated from the University of Denver with a BFA in studio art. After graduating, she began assembling her studio, purchasing a wheel, and installing a kiln in the sunporch studio.
When she began practicing regularly, she dedicated more and more time to her craft, and by August 2021, she transitioned into a full-time artist. Kegel is a member of the Boulder Potters’ Guild and East Boulder County Artists (EBCA).
Kegel isn’t only a creator. She participates in Guild shows, EBCA studio tours, and events and is a ceramic instructor at Wheelhouse Clay in Longmont and the Boulder Potters’ Guild.
Kegel’s art is showcased in various local and national galleries, “including Plinth Gallery, Redline, Muse Gallery, Pottery Northwest, the Firehouse Art Center, Flower City Arts Center, Pirate: Contemporary Art, and Charlie Cummings Gallery.”
“I create modern home decor and tableware, primarily made from porcelain. I am deeply inspired by the colors and textures of the natural world. I have been working with clay for ten years.”
Heather Kegel’s pottery art is displayed at The Old Gallery in Allenspark. To learn more, visit http://www.heatherkegelstudios.com/ or you can give her a call at 720-940-8796.
