BLACK HAWK - Gilpin students have set aside Monday, September 22, as a day to address mental health—in particular, suicide prevention.
Sponsored and led by teacher Heather Newman, the school’s Interact Club—the high school branch of Rotary International—is holding an assembly and then a mile-long walk around the school track to raise funds for the Second Wind Foundation and the Interact Club.
As noted on the The Second Wind website, the foundation develops job and business capabilities while altering participants’ lives so they can earn wages to support themselves, their families, and their community.
Participants in the walk will be asked for an optional $5 donation.
In addition to developing job skills, the local Second Wind will provide up to 10 free counseling sessions for those experiencing mental health difficulties.
The Interact Club members are interested in working for the good of the community, the United States, and the World.
Newman remarked that the students have shown remarkable leadership and initiative in planning for the walk and assembly. The assembly, which will be optional for students, will be held at 3:45 p.m. in the school’s auditorium, and the walk will begin at 4:15 p.m. on the school’s track.
Parents and staff are invited to walk with the students.
