On Wednesday, May 31, 2023, Parks Director Nicki Dunn, Parks Department staff, and members of Parks, Recreation, and Open Space Advisory Board (PROSAB) gathered at Guercio Field to plant a variety of trees as part of the Great Outdoors Colorado Resilient Communities Program grant.
Kat Barr, KC Cunilio, and Alexandra Zabierek of PROSAB volunteered, as well as Nederland’s Public Engagement Manager Peter Cacek and Trustee Jesse Seavers, to work alongside Dunn and her hardworking Parks Department team and help plant over 70 trees and bushes at Guercio Field. A plethora of native and drought resistant plants were selected, such as Mountain Alder, Dwarf Blue, Western Snowberry, Gooseberry, and White Yarrow.
A CASE skid steer loader with a post hole hydraulic digger attachment was used to break through tough areas in the soil and to dig deep enough in order for some of the trees to root, including a Silver Maple, which can grow up to 60 feet.
Thanks to the Parks Department team and to volunteers, their planting efforts, as well as the soil amending and hydroseeding, will help Guercio Field to grow and flourish into an even greater park for the whole community to enjoy.
