The paper thin barrier
of I’m doing ok and feeling fine
breaks come the news
or some off handed comment
about the end of the world
and the flood rushes in
a flood yes but not of water
for that is running out
see in a river in Germany
they found sunken stones
like a whisper from the past
etched in rock as a warning
of a doom they hoped
would never come
“If you can read this, weep”
and I did but I’m sad I did
because I try these days
to hold it together
to drive to work without crying
to notice how the wind
makes magic of the lake
