Magic in the air: Debra Elston dressed as Santa’s helper for the festive affair on Saturday, December 17. [/caption]
The Elks Lodge in Central City came alive on Saturday night as the community gathered for the Snowflake Dance, a festive event aimed at raising funds for the Belvidere Foundation’s ongoing efforts to restore the historic Belvidere and Shoofly structures. The event, which took place on December 17, 2023, was a festive celebration of community support and goodwill.
The Belvidere Foundation, with its mission to revitalize Central City by rehabilitating the Shoofly and Belvidere structures, has been at the forefront of preserving the rich history of the area. The Belvidere, with its Wisebart Hall dating back to 1868, has been a witness to the colorful past of Central City, housing the infamous Shoofly bar and dance hall known for its lively entertainment and spirited gatherings.
The Snowflake Dance aimed not only to raise funds for the restoration project but also to express gratitude to the friends, supporters, and donors who have contributed to this monumental effort. Main Street Commission Chair Barbara Thielemann reported a successful evening, raising $235 for the Belvidere Foundation.
The Belvidere Foundation has faced numerous challenges over the years, including the declaration of the Belvidere as a “hazardous building” in 1998 due to disrepair. However, with the support of the City, the Boettcher Foundation, the Gates Family Foundation, and various grants, the Foundation has made significant progress in its rehabilitation efforts.
In 2016, the Central City City Council dedicated Historic Preservation Funds to the Belvidere rehabilitation, and in 2020, a State Historical Fund grant further fueled the restoration plans. The ongoing construction in Phase 1 is slated for completion in 2024, with Phase 2 anticipated to be finished by 2025, just in time for the 150th Anniversary celebration of the Belvidere Theatre’s opening night.
The Snowflake Dance, in addition to its fundraising mission, was a night of joy and camaraderie. Eureka Street popcorn, fudge, cookies, brownies, and chips were served alongside refreshments and a full bar. The atmosphere was festive and laidback, with attendees enjoying classics and dance tunes spun by Eric Chinn, Events Coordinator on the Belvidere Foundation’s Board of Directors.
Some attendees dressed up for the occasion, with Debra Elston stealing the show in a cute elf costume. Children played pool and darts, while adults conversed at tables adorned with Christmas lights beneath giant elk mounts. The Elks Lodge, the venue for the event, also played a part in the fundraising efforts by gathering funds for local families in need.
To date, $3 million has been raised for the Belvidere restoration, providing the Foundation with the ability to apply for grants. Despite challenges in 2022 related to the aftermath of COVID-19, including supply chain and staffing issues, the Foundation is pleased to announce that asbestos removal is complete, and construction has commenced on the exterior brickwork.
Heading into 2024, the Belvidere Foundation plans to continue applying for grant funds and has enlisted the help of Zim Consulting for a capital campaign. They express gratitude to their donors, emphasizing that funds have been utilized in a highly impactful way. The community remains hopeful and committed to witnessing the restoration of the Belvidere to its former glory.
