Dear Editor,
Britta Mayo here sharing my story of a very long and challenging journey living with Cervical and Vocal Dystonia (a movement disorder).
For many years it took a heavy toll on my self-esteem and confidence. Maintaining a steady job became increasingly difficult and my hopes for a fulfilling life became dimmer and dimmer.
Then thanks to medical research, Colorado’s Medicaid health care and Medtronic, a medical device company, my future took an amazing turn! I became eligible for an innovative procedure called DBS (deep brain stimulation) surgery.
DBS is a brain surgery to implant electrodes that will send electric stimulation to brain areas responsible for bodily movements. These electrodes are then connected to a neuro-stimulator device implanted under the skin of my upper chest. Together these implants will be programmed to regulate brain activity responsible for involuntary movement.
My two surgeries have been successfully completed and my recovery is progressing well. In the following weeks my Medtronic implanted devices (similar to a pacemaker) will be programmed to help monitor and minimize my involuntary movements.
My future is bright! My gratitude is immeasurable and extends to all my friends, family and the wonderful Nederland community who through their Love, Support, Prayers, Understanding, Acceptance and Compassion carried me through the dark days and propelled me onto a future of unlimited potential and new found joy.
I am now able to drive a vehicle, secure steady employment and pursue continuing education.
I love you all and thank you for your support and for believing in me.
God Bless you always!
Much much Love,
Britta Jolie Mayo
