My name is Becky Shirey and I’m the Republican Candidate for Gilpin County Assessor. After years living and working in Gilpin County, I believe I know the area, many of the residents, and have watched how the county has changed since 1990.
When I moved here, Gilpin really was a rural community. In 1991 the first casino opened, and many people started coming to Black Hawk and Central City. Soon apartments and condos were built as well as new homes to accommodate all the new residents seeking the quiet and beauty of this area.
My work history uniquely qualifies me for Assessor. I moved from Chicago, being hired as a comptroller for a new Chevrolet Dealership in Colorado Springs. Over the next years I worked as comptroller and GM for other new car dealerships, overseeing budgets of over $13 Million ($31M in today’s money), 50 employees, and 10 support staff. I was in the top 5% of the nation for GM comptrollers, leading the stores into the computer age and improving profitability.
After moving to Gilpin County, I joined others in working in the casino business, eventually becoming Player Development Manager for Colorado Central Station/Isle Casino. I furthered my education in computer and people skills, overseeing approximately 1800 VIP accounts.
In 2006 I started my own Farmers Insurance Agency. I earned 4 insurance licenses as well as my security license. I ran a profitable business that allowed me to sell my agency in 2020. After the sale, I started a small independent insurance agency from my home as well as managing income properties in Colorado and Florida.
I’m a quick learner, I love a challenge and I’m comfortable with a fast and changing pace. I can motivate others to get results, while creating a sense of teamwork. I look forward to interacting with the varied people of Gilpin County as your Assessor and hope to learn from each one I meet.
My insurance agency specialized in mountain properties, and I have inspected and insured many homes in this area. I am familiar with the differences between reconstruction value, appraisal value, and market value in homes and I’m trained and experienced in calculating each of those.
As Assessor, I want to encourage more coordination between County departments and increase communications with the community. As Assessor I will manage an efficient but customer-focused department that will be an integral part of the Gilpin County government.
