Barbara Lawlor, Nederland.  Nederland Middle Senior High School principal Carrie Yantzer doesn’t like the month of May. She says it is the time of year she must prepare herself to say goodbye to the graduating seniors, to watch them set out into the world.

At the same time, she is proud of the Class of 2018. “They have made a positive mark on this school. They are strong, brave and creative and it has been an honor and a privilege to get to know them. They will make a positive difference in the world.”

Last Thursday night, May 9, 2018, members of the senior class were recognized by the Nederland Lions Club in the annual awards ceremony and scholarship presentation at the high school.

Throughout the year, athletes attend award ceremonies at the end of each sports season. The academic awards are given out only once at the end of the year when outstanding students are honored for their hard work and high grade achievement.

In between handing out the awards, the Lions’ Club volunteers gave out prizes that have been donated by local businesses and members of the community. Many of them involve food.
