Senior luncheon visits Chipeta Park

Posted

Members of the community came together for food and fun at an exciting senior luncheon hosted by Mountain Peak Life. This week’s event took place at Chipeta Park, where seniors and others in the community enjoyed drinks, an ice cream bar, lawn games, and good company. Food was provided for free to seniors over 60; delicious oven-fried chicken, coleslaw, potato salad, and watermelon.

The Nederland Community Library brought a selection of lawn games like cornhole, giant connect-four, and even stomp-rockets, which saw considerable use in a legendary stomp-rocket competition. Four brave souls each contested their aviation prowess by launching stomp-rockets above Chipeta Park. While they ate, attendees at the luncheon enjoyed live music by Chip Benson who strummed a number of beautiful tunes on his guitar.

This luncheon was one of many held by Mountain Peak Life, which hosts senior luncheons most often in the multipurpose room at the Nederland Community Center every Wednesday at noon. Seniors and other members of the community are welcome every Wednesday for nutritious meals. All meals are free to anyone over 60, though Mountain Peak Life suggests donations of $5 for attendees over 60, and $10 for those over five years, though no one 60+ years old will ever be denied a meal due to the inability to contribute financially.

With its spread of events and resources, Mountain Peak Life vastly benefits seniors in the community. Not only does the organization host luncheons every week, but they also provide a meal delivery program through Nederland Area Seniors to community members over 60, as well as a plethora of events for seniors and other community members to enjoy.

One of the most popular events is their very own pickleball group which meets five days a week at the Community Center. “And, gosh, is it fun,” says pickleball enthusiast Brent Warren who has been playing the sport for ten years. Anyone of all ages is welcome to join any of the beginner or intermediate games or classes.

Otherwise, Mountain Peak Life supports other adult activities such as hiking, wellness programs, social outings, music, dancing, educational presentations, and many more resources and referrals to the needs of their growing community. Be sure to check out the upcoming Jazz and Wine Fest on August 26 at Chipeta Park to support Mountain Peak Life, and enjoy unlimited tastings and Brazilian Soul and Funk Jazz.

Soon, too, Mountain Senior Life is planning on opening a senior lounge at the Nederland Community Center. This addition will provide a “much needed private and uninterrupted space for our older adults to gather”, says Mountain Peak Life director, Reba Mitchell. This multi-use space is planned to be used for meetings, club groups, creating, relaxing, gaming, technology access, socializing, workspace, and so much more. The lounge is planned to soft-open in September and will continue to grow as time passes.

Until then, be sure to be on the lookout for upcoming events through Mountain Peak Life.
