Barbara Lawlor, Gilpin County. Kylie Harrington is only four years old. Wearing a turquoise net fairy outfit that flowed behind her like wings, she entered every event at last Saturday’s Gilpin County Buckle Series Gymkhana at the fairgrounds. She had glittery turquoise cowboy boots which didn’t come close to reaching the stirrups.
Although Kylie came in last or near last in every event, because her mother Pam who was leading her, Kylie has a definite step-up with starting at such a young age. Her mother has worked with horses most of her life as a wrangler, trainer, therapist and operated the Gold Lake Stables, bringing in kids from all over the Front Range.
The second gymkhana of the Buckle series attracted about 40 riders, aged 4 and up, competing in their choice of four events: Poles, Figure 8 Barrels, Cloverleaf Barrels and Flags. The events were timed and adhered to a set course and rules. Many of the riders own their own horses and many ride horses they have worked with at Sheila Ranegar’s Rising Sun Horse Ranch, summer camp this summer.
They are all going after the big prize of the Belt Buckle, which is earned by having the most points at the end of the series.
In the 4-8 Pee Wee category, Abilene Adleman took first place on Joey in the poles and the Figure 8 Barrels; Allayah Boogard on Kenai took first in the Cloverleaf Barrels and Flags.
In the Junior, 9-13 category, Rowan Nasty on Velvet took first in all events; poles, Figure 8 Barrels, Cloverleaf Barrels and Flags
In the Intermediate Category, 14-17, Jordan Hansen on Spirit took first place in the Poles, the Cloverleaf Barrels and the Figure 8 Barrels and Sarie Lund took first place in Flags.
