The Nederland Sustainability Advisory Board (SAB) met on Thursday, March 28 to review the Animal Code Ordinance and see updates from the different subcommittees.
In 2022, the Board of Trustees (BOT) was encouraged to amend the Animal Code because the community felt it was too broad. The Planning Commission took on the task by examining rules about health and sanitation guidelines, square footage requirements, and the types of animals allowed as livestock. Since this project has taken over two years, the dynamic of the BOT has changed, so they are not unanimously in favor of making changes anymore. The Planning Commission is meeting with Animal Control this week to get their opinion on creating a more specific code versus leaving it broad.
The river guardians, Alan Apt and Rich Orman, are monitoring public information regarding the Caribou Mine and the expansion of Eldora’s water storage system. Expanding the water source is still in the beginning stages of planning, so the guardians will continue to follow updates as they come.
The zero waste subcommittee is now meeting quarterly. At the April meeting, they will discuss specific strategies for assisting local businesses in preparing for the plastic bag ban on July 1.
The electric vehicle from Colorado Carshare is slowly starting to gain more attention. The Level 3 charger is one step closer to installation since Xcel recently acted on the permit for the charger. As the weather warms up and the new Level 3 charger is in the works, SAB continues encouraging the community to take the car for a drive. The Board recommends that residents create an account soon to make it easier to book in last-minute situations.
