Omayra Acevedo, Waterton Canyon. I did something I seldom do. I allowed myself to be convinced that it wouldn’t be so bad to go out during a holiday. It was Easter and I found myself leaving my home by 6 a.m. A bit later than I normally would, to embark on a hike – a popular one, nonetheless. Near Louviers, Colorado, off of Waterton Road, you can embark on an out and back 12.4-mile journey along the South Platte River.
The Waterton Canyon hike is a wide, winding dirt road through spectacular rocky sights. The climb is gradual, making it easy for anyone to walk. If you reach the end, you will see the Strontia Springs Dam; if you’re lucky enough, you just might spot the large herd of Rocky Mountain Big Horn Sheep that calls the canyon home.
Hiking isn’t the only recreational activity you can enjoy throughout Waterton Canyon. While I was there, I saw picnic goers, runners, cyclists, equestrians and anglers. On my way in and on my way out, almost in the exact same spot, I came across Colorado Mule Deer. I find them to be so gentle and beautiful. But I’ve never tried approaching one to put myself at risk of having a different opinion.
I bumped into a donkey who was refusing to hike the trail until his herd caught up to him. He, too, was as adorable as the deer. Due to lack of shade, I am going to recommend you wear layers, a hat, sunblock and head out early. Bring plenty of water, some snacks and, of course, the camera! But leave your four-legged companion at home as they are not allowed in. The last thing you want is a citation from the rangers patrolling the area.
Yes, I did something out of character, but even I have to admit that it was well worth it. You can make your time at Waterton Canyon whatever you would like. That’s the beauty of a place like this. It offers you endless possibilities in nature. It’s great for those that want a long hike, bike ride or run; it’s perfect for anyone seeking peace and relaxation. Above all else, it’s a beautiful location and easy enough for everyone to enjoy. Between the river, wildlife and sense of peace I experienced, I can’t think of a reason not to recommend Waterton Canyon for your next Colorado adventure.
