Rise Against Hunger in Nederland, Oct 3

Hansen Wendlandt, Nederland.

Each of the last three years, many dozens of Nederland-area folks have joined together to pack 10,000+ meals for hungry children abroad. We’ve sent loads to El Salvador, South Sudan and Cambodia. This fall, October 3, 2018, at 5:45 p.m., at Teens Inc, we’ll be at it again!

This is such a fun, inter-generational, hands-on, international outreach event. Neighbors can build relationships while doing good; young children can help transport the smallest baskets; strong folks can lift the heavy sacks of rice, soy protein, dried vegetable and vitamin packs; energetic seniors can measure each filled bag to the gram; teenagers can pack the boxes to send across the ocean; and folks of all sorts can work together to act locally and globally.

Nederland Community Church is arranging this event again, along with great financial assistance from the Lions Club, Tebo Properties, many generous gifts and proceeds from our holiday wreath sale last year. We partner with Rise Against Hunger, a great non-profit (full four stars on Charity Navigator) that acts as a mission bridge between Americans who want to serve and foreign organizations that work directly with hungry people. Their unique model is to send particularly healthy food to schools, so that parents are incentivized to educate their kids, thus helping to break the longer-term cycle of poverty. They work in about 75 countries, serving people with no religious strings attached.

We look forward to your help at this year’s event! Sixty of us can finish this project in about two hours. Or, if you can’t come but still want to contribute, you can donate through the church. Each meal is only 35 cents, so it only takes a little change to make a lot of difference! Or, another option: we are again selling holiday wreaths, the proceeds of which will go toward next year’s 10,000+ meals. Watch for an announcement in October about how to order these decorations or gifts.
