ELDORA MOUNTAIN RESORT - In a test of who was in the best shape heading into the new ski season, Eldora Mountain Resort teamed up with energy drink giant Red Bull to bring a unique trail race to North America for the first time on Sunday September 21, 2025.
The first Red Bull Outrun The Lift race was held in Petrosani, Romania, in 2019. It has become a popular preseason race in Europe. Red Bull chose Eldora to debut the Outrun The Lift race in North America.
The Director of Marketing for Eldora Mountain Resort, Sam Bass, said the goal was to make it to the top of the mountain before the lift chair that started at the bottom at the same time.
The Red Bull Outrun The Lift trail run featured 127 runners in two divisions. They raced the Alpenglow Lift up Challenge Mountain in a timed race. The course was about a mile long with 1,000 feet of vertical uphill, and ended at the top of the La Belle run.
The Alpenglow lift was run at a speed of 1.3 meters per second, the same speed as the old Cannonball and Challenge lifts. So it would take about 14 minutes for a chair to get to the top.
The race was divided into an elite division and a citizens or sports division. There were 30 runners in the elite division and 97 runners in the sports division. Runners were grouped into waves of 20 and started when the chair with their wave number started up the hill.
Red Bull provided trophies and cash prizes for the top three men and women finishers in each division. The cash prizes for the Elite division were $900 for first, $500 for second and $300 for third. The Sports division paid $500 for first, $300 for second and $100 for third.
Nederland High School graduate and local runner Megan Feeley won the Women’s Sports Division with a time of 17:24. Second place went to Lesley Smith in 17:52, and Joslynn Peterson took third in 17:58.
The winner of the Men’s Sport Division was Jason McGowan in 13:58. Ben Weber was second with a time of 14:46, and Juan Bolanus came in third at 14:59.
The Women’s Elite Division winner was Nicole Esplin in 15:48. Karley Remple was second in 15:28 and Megan Cooke was third in 16:08.
Jeret Gillinham was the Men’s Elite Division winner. He was the only runner to break 12 minutes, with a time of 11:33. Nickolas Scudder was second in 12:10, while Meikael Beaudon Rousseau came in third in 12:35.
Eldora opened the Timbers lodge and cafeteria for the runners and spectators. The ski shop was also open, offering 50% off on select merchandise from last year
Full, mid-week, family and multi-day passes can be purchased at eldora.com. Prices are scheduled to go up the end of October.
Eldora is planning to start their lifts for real on November 14, 2025. They are also starting to hire seasonal staff. From the website home page, click on The Mountain and then the Employment link or go to eldora.com/the-mountain/about-contact-sustainability/employment-at-eldora.
