Library Resources for Small Children: 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten
Geneva Mixon, Nederland. The Nederland Community Library (NCL) is in the second year of the 1000 Books Before Kindergarten. We have had three “graduates” to date, and dozens of kids are enrolled. The program is open to new registrants.
The 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program is designed to help parents prepare their children for one of life’s big milestones: kindergarten. Research has proven that children build the skills they need to learn to read long before they start kindergarten. The most effective way to prepare your child for reading is to read with them.
This program is open to all kids not yet in kindergarten. We encourage all the children from Nederland, Ward, Rollinsville, and the surrounding Peak-to-Peak region to register for the 1000 Books Before Kindergarten program, be they newborns or preschoolers.
When you register at the NCL circulation desk for 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program, you will receive a binder, pages to log the first 100 books, and tips to help make reading aloud one of the most enjoyable and beneficial activities you will ever share with a child. As you progress in 100 book increments, your kiddos will earn additional prizes and get new pre-reading skills to help prepare them for kindergarten and life-long learning.
Tumble Books
Tumble Books is a great resource to help kids listen to a story even if no one has time to read to them. The Tumble Books slogan is “e-books for e-kids.” They have a large selection of storybooks and read-alongs. Plus they have literacy puzzles and games. Tumble Books has the classic title, Good Night, Good Night, Construction Site, and that seems to me the favorite of all the kids who listen at the library.
If your kiddo is in the mood for some spooky stories to get in the mood for Halloween, Tumble Books has some great resources. Two of my favorites are Boy Soup (a giant has a cold and has a recipe for boy soup to help make him recover. A smart young lady saves the day, saves the boy, and cures the giant in this tall tale).
Another favorite is Frank was a monster who wanted to dance.
So he put on his hat, and his shoes made in France…
and opened a jar and put ants in his pants!
Thus begins this monstrously funny, deliciously disgusting, hilarious story of a monster who follows his dream to dance.
We have Tumble Books in the library, but you can also access it from home. Just visit nedlib.org and click on the Tumble Books icon. If you access from the library home page then you don’t need a login or password.
Reserve the Community Room
Did you know that any non-profit group can reserve the Community Room for private meetings?
This includes book clubs, craft groups, local boards, and town meetings, girl scout groups, and groups of individuals coming together to play games. These are just a few of the types of groups that currently meet in the space. Check for availability and learn the details of the Community Room agreement by stopping by the circulation desk or calling 303-258-1101.
There is something for everyone at Nederland Community Library.
