Celine Cooper, Nederland.  We can all feel it. The chill in the breeze, the shortening hours of daylight, the subtle turning of the leaves. Yes, fall is almost here, and for young people and educators that means school is back in session. For some, this is an exciting and rewarding event that is looked forward to for weeks leading up to the first day. The possibilities of new teachers, friends, colleagues make going back to school a thrilling change from the dog days of summer. For others, the idea of going to a new place, starting a new routine and having to do it all with strange adults and other kids seems terrifying. No matter where you or your little one fall on the excitement spectrum, there is always a place you can come to refresh, read and relax. That place, of course, is the Library.

Libraries have historically been places where the public can go to learn, be inspired, work on resumes or job applications, do homework, or simply read for a while in silence.  At the Nederland Community Library we strive to be a place where students and teachers alike can feel welcome. This school year, the Library will offer fun activities for all ages including Minecraft and Magic the Gathering clubs, Chess and Game nights, Lego Clubs, and holiday performances and events. We have just what you and your family need to re-connect and have fun amidst the back-to-school madness.

The Library staff is also in communication with Nederland teachers about what subjects are being studied by which grade, and how we can best compliment and support the learning process. Nederland is blessed with amazing resources at school, and the Library is here to act as an additional source for information, or as a place to study alone or with friends. Students will enjoy a new study table in the youth and Teen area, for quiet individual studying, or they can reserve our Community Room for group study sessions, book discussions or clubs.

Whatever your needs are to help get back in the school spirit, the Library has tools to help you get on track and succeed. We hope to see you soon!

Stay tuned for information regarding after-school programs at the Library this fall. Information will be posted on our Facebook page and around town.

Celine Cooper is the Children’s Services Coordinator at the Nederland Community Library. When she isn’t empowering young people through literature and education, you may find her reading books, or enjoying the outdoors. Sometimes both at the same time.
