The Gilpin County RE-1 Board of Education held a special meeting on December 5, 2023, at 7 p.m. in the school boardroom to welcome newly elected or reelected members, and to reorganize for the new term.
The new board, composed of Kristen Goodlet, Joe Marr, Joseph Stranaly, Sarah Swanson, and Tami Velasquez were all in attendance. Superintendent David MacKenzie presided over the meeting and provided the agenda.
The first order of business was to elect officers for the new term. Sarah Swanson was elected President; Joe Marr Vice President; and Kristen Goodlet, Secretary/Treasurer. Goodlet was also appointed to the board of the Mt. Evans Board of Cooperative Education Services (BOCES). The Mt. Evans BOCES is composed of Clear Creek, Gilpin, and Platte Canyon school districts, who share resources for gifted or special student programs.
Karen Quanbeck from the Colorado Education Initiative (CEI) gave a brief presentation on the CEI Design Team Strategic Purpose project. The project, composed of students, staff, and parents, worked to develop Graduate and Educator profiles. Quanbeck had a slide presentation to show the results.
MacKenzie’s Superintendent’s Report highlighted pending changes in educator evaluations resulting from the 2022/2023 state legislative session. The change will involve a different mix between professional practices and student data in the evaluations. This is currently at 50-50 but will change to 70-30, respectively.
Under Capital Updates, MacKenzie stated that the school was finishing up the bleachers, press box, and handicap-accessible projects. Regarding the Highway 119 Sewer Interconnect rebid, MacKenzie said that seven construction companies showed interest in the project. Bids are due by December 20, 2023.
The board unanimously approved the minutes from the November 14 meeting, and the changes to 18 policies after a second reading. The meeting was then adjourned at 8:01 p.m.
The next meeting will be December 12, 2023, at 7 p.m. in the school boardroom.
