Dear Editor,
The swallows that return yearly to the eaves of our Nederland Post Office are being chased off by the cleaning of the building and windows. This destroys their nests that they are building for their eggs. Over and over again the swallows are being chased off.
Cliff swallows are protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. This is a federal law, which makes it unlawful to pursue, hunt, take, capture, kill, or sell them, and grants full protection to any bird parts, including EGGS AND NESTS.
The swallows have been making homes at this building for many years, and certainly can be confused by this change in attitude and disregard for the wildlife we hold so dear here in our mountains. Ignoring laws isn’t what Nederland is all about, and I am appalled that the Post Office employees find it acceptable to destroy wildlife habitat for the “safety and comfort” of their customers.
