Prepping your deck for summer enjoyment

Coloradans are outdoorsy people, especially in the summertime. Whether hiking, rafting, camping, grilling, or sitting out on a deck, the great outdoors calls to everyone.

From snow to rain, mountain decks are exposed to some of the most extreme elements on Earth. Did you know that sunshine is one of the biggest problems? It can leave decks with a faded color or a splintered dry surface.

Depending on your deck’s location, sun exposure can be detrimental to its longevity. Deck boards that constantly heat up and cool down often begin to warp. If you’re building a new deck, build with materials known to resist extreme sunlight to prevent sun exposure from ruining your deck.

To prevent fading lines and uneven shading, move any furniture or items off the deck before a heatwave strikes. Here are a few tips on how to prep your deck for summer. It’s best to keep your deck clear year-round.

Although generally harmless, leaves and other debris are a welcome breeding ground for pests, and if left on the deck for too long, they can begin to change the coloring in the deck boards.

Daily or weekly snow removal will also help extend the life of your deck. Over time, snow can cause rot and decay, costing you more money to replace than it does to practice seasonal maintenance.

Sanding a deck and staining it with a weather-proof stain can be a quick project, and you’ll be surprised how it will make your deck and railing look brand new.

If your deck is in great shape but you’d like to spice it up for summer, adding a few rail-hanging flower pots, a tabletop firepit, or a hammock can make all the difference. If you’re looking for materials on the affordable side of things, consider searching local advertisements or the Facebook marketplace.

As with any part of a house, a deck says a lot about a home. The upkeep may be time-consuming, but it’s well worth it. Now, stop daydreaming about the perfect deck and get started. Summer is around the corner!
