Some words for the week
another spring snowfall
presses a strange pause
on this place
it’s like we’ve never
had a storm like this
cars sit buried and stuck
people hoard canned goods
and cancel plans
it seems to feel to some
that the sky is falling
and it is but it soon stops
and the shovel helps
to scrape away the remnants
as the highway is clogged
with drifts and bad driving
on my way home from work
I wonder what the foxes do
in four feet of snow
how they cope
when we so barely can
and then I see one
not a minute later
scurry over the snow
without stress or sinking
light as fiery air
up and over the mounds
and back into the woods
and I laugh
for who is meant to be here
who thrives so easily
who struggles
at the slightest slush
who are we up here so high
an ever-growing mess
while the remaining foxes
almost float
