Some words for the week
frost on a cracked windshield
diamond shine before melting
dripping into the wind
as I drive through the forest
still wearing my coat
seeing my breathing
hanging outside of time
in the air in front of my face
and all the ponds I pass
are frozen over
the hillside meadows
pallets of blushed yellow
and dry winter brown
the scattered snow
settled on game trail
cut zigzagged
through dead grass
and the sun seems
just a suggestion of heat
the tree shade
and mountain shadows
eating up the light
and I turn on my heated seat
and though I travel alone
I turn on the one
for the passenger seat too
because I’m thinking of you
and whenever you’ll be
next to me again
I want you to be warm
