Some Words for the Week
I drive down the city road
and I think about
the problems of the world
the people sleeping on the street
the litter in the wind
the lack of snow in December
and overwhelmed with worry
and ware
and trying to fit some fun
into the weekend
after a long week of work
I sit at a stop light
and attached to a streetlight
I see an ad for an exhibit
at the history museum
about the ice age
and I smile
because I realize that
for the earth
all this
the city
the suffering
the failing government
every human life
is just a sneeze
a faint brush of air
a sort of nothing
that everything I’ve ever seen
was once buried in ice
and that one day
it will be again
and my credit card bill
and my empty gas tank
and the meaning of my life
everything I’ve ever thought
or loved or feared
will live and die
and live and die again
so will I
and eventually
after the great warming
the ice will come again
and in some form
we all will too
