Peak Perspectives: Rebuilding a community

Posted

A different train of thought.. fixing town from the inside out.

Yesterday, Tuesday, September 12, we watched a little bit of history slowly cascade downward with the tug of the iron bucket pulling apart the Snyder’s Garage. There wasn’t a large crowd, although a few town members sat idly by to watch the deconstruction of this iconic building. Even the Mayor showed up to capture the history being made. The building was mitigated for asbestos over the last year and was not able to be rehabilitated. It simply needed to come down. The next plan for the spot? I hear an arcade may be going in.

One of the things I love to do is record live news events. Normally these are 3- to 5-minute live videos on our social media platforms. Yesterday I recorded almost an hour of video. While recording the tear down, Steve Snyder watched online and commented on random parts of the process. It was a nice flowing online conversation about history.

Afterwards a few of us sat down to celebrate a job well done with the contractor and the excavator in charge of the mitigation and tear down. And we talked about the future of the community. We talked about what we think the community needs and we talked about the housing crisis. We brainstormed ways to counteract that crisis and what that could look like from a local perspective.

Yesterday felt good. For me, it was a feeling of accomplishment that the town could be repaired somehow. And a feeling that it doesn’t have to be a large-scale project, but could happen just like yesterday did. One building at a time. And I’m thankful to have witnessed it. And I’m thankful for the work happening in the community to make small projects like this happen to rebuild a town that has been rotting into itself for far too long. Progress, slowly being made. My thoughts anyways.

Today I have some computer repair work to get going on with Chris Eddy. He’s helping one of our programs work on a new laptop. And I have one of our other new computers arriving for the office. And then I’ll focus on finalizing the form to enter the baking contest on Friday. Friends, if you love to bake and love to support local nonprofits, consider baking for the contest. The Mountain-Ear’s Taste of the Peaks presents a Gourmet Baking Contest and Sale to take place on Friday, September 15, starting at 5 p.m. at Very Nice Brewing Company, located in the Caribou Village Shopping Center, 20 Lakeview Drive Unit 112. The categories are Breads, Cookies, Cakes, Pies, and Preserves; there is no fee for entry and contestants are urged to enter in as many categories as they like. All proceeds from the auction afterwards will be donated to the Nederland Food Pantry.
