Peak Perspectives: Now hiring interns for back-to-scool

Posted

Back to school? Say what? Seems like school just let out for summer. Thursday is a bittersweet day for me as a parent. My youngest child will go to his first day of his senior year at Nederland High School. The beginning of the end of high school. WOW!

Many of you know I have been some tiny part of the Boulder Valley School system since I moved here in 1986, when I started school in Nederland. There is a feeling of relief, like it’s finally the last year. Then there is a feeling of “what next.” Nothing is going to change, right? I’m not going anywhere. I have a great job. I’m super entrenched in the communities. I’ll still go to games and plays. And school events, right?

I spend a lot of time worrying about what life will look like when the last kid graduates. Right now, I’m making a promise to make as many games as possible. And as many school functions. And every other part of this final senior year. Which means I’m going to prioritize everything I can to be present. I’m not a hundred percent sure what that means yet, but I think it means I’ll see ya on the campus?

Speaking of which, my son is one of nine current interns at The Mountain-Ear. We started our intern program in 2017. We’ve had six graduating classes over those years (college and high school students). And several years we have had multiple interns. One of the things I am researching is the number of students that have come through our doors, so I can figure out the best way to grow our program. I have this theory that teaching the kids about the importance of journalism, and specifically about small town news, is the best way to keep students engaged in the future of reporting. Interns can be expected to investigate, research, and fact-check information, propose and write local interesting stories, and basically, yeah, report the news. Our interns may also work on our podcast, work on video projects (coming soon), and more!

And right now, we’re hiring. We are looking to hire a senior intern from Chinook and Gilpin schools. If you are a high school senior looking for a paid intern position, email info@themountainear.com for more info. We’re also hiring a college intern to take on some of the projects our high schoolers can’t, simply because of school schedules.
