I am so incredibly proud of our interns at the paper. Right now we have nine. Yeah.
These amazing people are turning in high-quality stories that you are reading every week.
The Mountain-Ear has had an intern program since 2017. It’s one of the programs I started, that I am most proud of! Back then, Barbara Lawlor helped me work with interns to get them excited about the program. She taught them how to cover a story and what angle to use for photos. John Scarffe has also been integral in helping to mentor our young students. As well as Lynn Hirshman, Sara Sandstrom and way back, Sara VanValkenburgh. Our first official interns were college students. Now we have interns in college and high school.
The current high school crew are from Nederland, Gilpin, and Coal Creek. The current college crew attend CU Boulder and American University. And hey, I have two intern spots left for fall/spring for a Gilpin high school senior and a Chinook high school senior. These are paid internships and students write at least 13 stories per semester. And it looks great on a resume.
This week we have a moose attack story, a 4th of July event story, a business story, a dog rescue story, a food pantry story, and more. That’s at least five this week, from interns.
Above, you can see this motto. Here it is again, as a reminder of how we work as a team. “Each staff member is one spoke in a very large wheel. Without one spoke, the wheel does not turn effectively. We welcome community journalists and homegrown journalism.”
This week is also an “It’s Your Turn” edition, with a lot of reader-written contributions. As well as our normal coverage of government, business, music and more.
I’m super excited about some upcoming events we have happening. We are participating in the Ned Jazz & Wine event, as a sponsor. Check out their info at https://nedjazzwine.com/
