This week I would love to tell you a long story about the last six months of chaos I have been dealing with. Behind the scenes. As a person individually, and as a member of a staff of people who create our awesome TEAM at the newspaper. I have lost sleep, lost concentration, lost blocks of time I can never get back. I spent hundreds of hours worrying and my anxiety has been through the roof. But no more. The issue is resolved and I’m going to put it behind me. And today, after very careful consideration, I will not share more than that. I personally need to focus forward. I need to get my mind where it needs to be.
This week, I’m going to throw out some thoughts right now that are more personal. A little bit of a request. A little bit of information to share how some of our days go here. Specifically this day, deadline day.
Right now I am working at home a lot on Monday and Tuesday. I get a lot done when I work uninterrupted. Monday I work a normal 8- or 9-hour day. Monday is a good day.
Today is Tuesday. It’s almost the end of the day and it’s 9:52 p.m., as I sit starting this column. I am listening to the Nederland BOT meeting. I did not attend the Gilpin BOCC work session this morning because I had another meeting I needed to be at. Then I was lucky enough to grab lunch with my husband in Central City, before heading back home to work. I average 18 hour days on Tuesday. Sometimes more. Tuesday is a day of controlled chaos, because I bounce between my job roles and attempt to stay ahead of every move, not allowing myself time to catch my breath.
On Tuesday I am hard to reach. If I’m not in meetings, I’m focused on getting through the last couple hundred emails. I get through them every week, one by one. Sometimes I am sending proofs out until 1 a.m., for approval by morning.
Also, on Tuesday, the main phone is at the office and answered by our awesome assistant, Britt. She’s there Wednesday too and is happy to answer your calls, accept your hand written letters, and to answer your general newspaper questions in person. At home, I answer the most urgent calls and return the rest on Wednesday. A hint, if you need to reach me urgently, text me first. Remember to use my personal phone, not the office phone. Tuesday is hard for outside of the newspaper communication.
It’s 10:18 p.m. and the BOT meeting just ended. Now Christopher will submit it. Mindy will also submit Central City. And we’ll call it a night. I’ll wrap by midnight. and be back at 6:30 a.m. to finish this off. Next week Joyce will finish it and I’ll be picking up a lifelong friend and bringing him home after an extended visit elsewhere. Wish me luck. And clear roads.
