Last week, I had a call asking me to clarify an article we shared about a specific business. It was interesting because we do hundreds of articles about businesses every year. This year we have had targeted articles about businesses. These are part of our Keep it Local series. The focus has been to provide 104 articles about Gilpin businesses and 104 articles about Nederland businesses. We are plugging away at the stories and have been sharing them weekly since the project began in January and February. The project would have run from January 1 to December 31, but with the funding coming in late, the project will run into February of 2023.
First, I want to say thanks to the Town of Nederland and Gilpin County for this:
Sponsored by Gilpin County Commissioners, with funds from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA).
Sponsored by the Town of Nederland, with funds from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA).
With the ability to cover every business in both communities (at our discretion), we have shared dozens of stories with you. Stories that otherwise may have gone untold. A full report of all businesses covered will be included in the March 2, 2023, edition.
The ability to pick and choose businesses has been a key part of providing these stories. Some businesses have simply said, “No, thank you.” Some have never responded to calls, emails or us dropping off the form to fill out. Some have jumped in, both feet, with an exuberant, “Yes, thanks for thinking of us.” We get business leads off our website and referrals from other businesses saying, “Hey, you should cover these folks over here.”
The stories are selected by us, and by you, our readers. The most important part of the stories is that they are the stories of our communities. They are “sponsored” by the Keep it Local project, which is sponsored by the Town of Nederland and Gilpin County. But they are never selected by either entity. In no way is the entity “supporting a specific business.” The entity is simply allowing us to do our job, so that you, our readers, have the information on all of these amazing businesses. This recurring section is sponsored by both entities, with funds from ARPA.
If anyone ever has any questions about anything to do with the newspaper, please feel free to email me at info@themountainear.com or call me at 303- 810-5409. We look forward to sharing the rest of these stories with you in the future!
Something I am super excited about this week is the historical archive that is coming along beautifully. The archive will be available to the public for FREE, through the Colorado Historic Newspaper Collection (CHNC). In September, we learned that our first 11 years of archives had been properly digitally archived. I am looking to get the process moving on the next steps of digital archive.
The total cost of the archive is just over $35,000. We have already paid the first $5,000 with grants and donations. The next collection of reels will take us from January 5, 1989, to December 21,1995. The estimate for the next section is $5501.47.
We are actively soliciting donations to help make this process happen. Historical newspapers are only valuable when you can read them and share the news with others. Help us realize this goal with your contributions. My goal has been, and remains, keeping this newspaper going. Having the historical archive available to all to read, for FREE, is a huge part of the process.
