Peak Perspectives

Posted

On Tuesday night, January 11, my son was digging through boxes (and boxes) to try to find an article on a man who recently passed away. We know he was in the paper sometime between 1979 and 1982 (or so).

Sadly, we did not locate the requested article and photo.

However, it’s fascinating to read the old stories. I LOVE digging through these papers. I learn so much about our history as a community, and about our greater Peak to Peak region.

And it’s interesting to realize we are having the exact same discussion on Tuesday, about parking issues in downtown Nederland, that we have had so many times.

And conversations about town employees quitting. And about festivals. And the police and fire departments. And.. my gosh.. we have the same conversations over and over again, for decades.

We NEED to get this archive into a digital format. We have priced it out roughly, to get the newspaper into a digital format, it would cost around $35,000. We are planning to work with the Nederland Community Library, the Nederland Area Historical Society and the Colorado Historic Newspaper Collection.

I’d love input from the community. How can we make this a reality? Do we ask for donations? Do we wait a couple years for grants to come in?

Looking for an in-person meeting to brainstorm? We are currently scheduling News & Brews meetings once per month in 2022. Want to host one? Email us!

Upcoming special editions include the Valentine’s edition on February 10, the St. Patrick’s Day edition on March 17 and the fun April Fools’ edition on March 31.

The Mountain-Ear is YOUR community newspaper, covering the news you need since 1977.

As always my door is open (in Nederland and Black Hawk), my phone is on (303-810-5409) and my email gets checked regularly at publisher1977@gmail.com. Thanks for reading!
