Over four decades ago, two young community members met for the first time. They knew almost instantly that they had a special connection.
Involved in a church in Oklahoma, Paul Dyer attended a singles night at the largest church in the community. Around 150 people attended this singles group, including Paul, wanting to make a connection. Ultimately, that’s not where Paul would find his life partner.
Another young woman in the community caught Paul’s eye. She came home on the weekends, studying physical therapy at Oklahoma State, and the moment he first saw her, he knew he wanted to meet her.
Paul asked mutual friends about this woman, Carol, to learn more about her, but Paul struggled to find an opportunity to introduce himself during the weekends she was home. Finally, one day, he introduced himself and struck up his first conversation with her.
The connection was instant, and once the two started dating, they knew it was natural. Just a couple of weeks into their relationship, they knew they wanted to get married. They didn’t rush into wedding plans, waiting a year so that friends and family could get to understand the dynamic more and so that the two could focus on schooling.
In 2025, Paul and Carol will celebrate 42 years of marriage, with their ceremony taking place on May 17th, 1983. The two say they’re asked constantly about what their secret is. Their consistent answer is that they have no idea. For them, it just worked.
However, something that has always kept their relationship strong is communication and trust. Paul and Carol are both more than happy to live their own lives and focus on their own interests, but they also always constantly find ways to spend time together.
The two trust each other completely, with both of them embracing their commitment to each other and knowing that they won’t speak ill of each other to anyone else. If one is ever worried about the other, it’s about their safety and well-being, not about their mutual respect and care for each other.
Of course, bumps in the road are inevitable in any relationship, but Paul and Carol have always worked through those bumps and embraced changes in their individual and combined lives. The two have moved 27 times across the United States throughout their relationship, and the constant changes that resulted have allowed them to adapt together.
Paul and Carol emphasize living their own lives and embracing their own preferences. They keep two different kinds of milk in the fridge, they use two different kinds of toothpaste, and generally, they both embrace their own personal preferences.
Paul remembers being instantly taken by Carol, and Carol also remembers being instantly taken by Paul. She initially thought Paul was younger than her, so she generally wasn’t interested at first. After they talked more, however, Carol saw in Paul a more intelligent, put-together man than others in her age group – and she later learned that Paul is, in fact, six years older than her.
From their initial connection, Paul and Carol have developed their dynamic for over forty years. For them, the simple things matter to them the most – communication, trust, and perhaps most importantly, finding ways to laugh with each other as much as they possibly can.
