Barbara Lawlor, Nederland. The Nederland Panthers captured their third win last Thursday, October 2, when they hosted the Justice Phoenix, who went home lamenting their 20-42 loss.
The Panthers are now 3-3 and look forward to this weekend when they host the Longmont Christian Warriors, who have a 0-5 record. It is homecoming and there will be a parade with class floats and homecoming royalty parading around the field. It is Ned's chance to get back into a winning season.
Last Saturday's game against Phoenix began with three touchdowns in the first quarter. Quarterback Mike Wood was out because of an injury last week and junior Kellen Sequeira took over. Trig Campbell intercepted a Justice pass and ran the ball downfield to where Noah Ridnell carried it into the end zone. Senior Jaron Dillon scored the next touchdown and senior Ike Thibideau scored two extra points and Ned was up 14-0
Miles Pancoast and Connor Demo partnered up for a sack and Justice had to punt. Quin Kuechenmeister ran the ball into the end zone for another six points. The extra points failed and the score towards the end of the first quarter was 20-0 and the Panthers were having a good time. But the game wasn't over.
At the beginning of the second quarter, the Panthers were on the Justice 10-yard line when the Phoenix recovered a Ned fumble. A bad snap led them into the Panther end zone for a safety and with a score of 22-0, Nederland seemed unstoppable.
When Nederland moved into Justice territory Ridnell ran the ball in for a TD. A pass to Jaron Dillon was complete but the a holding call brought the extra point play back and then a pass interference call took the Panthers to the 10 yard line. They didn't make it and the game stood at 28-0.
Justice then completed a long pass and then another for their first touchdown and they were on the scoreboard 28-6. Ned got the ball and Justice intercepted a pass and on fourth down and seven threw a touchdown pass and the score was upped to 28-12.
The third quarter was a defensive battle and neither team scored. In the fourth quarter the Panthers were forced to punt two more times. A Phoenix pass was knocked down by Noah Ridnell and the Panthers moved the ball to first and goal. Sequeria made it happen and it was 34-12. In two plays Justice scored again and it was 34-20 with 3 minutes on the clock. Two touchdowns. It didn't seem possible but the threat was there. Not for long.
Nederland picked up two first downs and then Jaron Dillon carried the ball in and Kellen Sequeira scored two extra points on a keeper. The 42-20 score was good at the end of the game.
Noah Ridnell was leading rusher with 166 yards and Jaron Dillon also had a great running game with 115 yards.
