Barbara Lawlor, Nederland. The Nederland High School gymnasium was filled with Panther fans last Tuesday night for the first home volleyball game of the season. Although it was a 3 -0 loss for the home team, new head coach Juliana Kellner, says the Ned girls improved with each game. The scores were: 25-15, 25-12 and 25-21.
Coach Kellner has been a volleyball coach for the past five years, last year as an eighth grade coach in Stevens’ Point, Wisconsin. She has also coached both girls and boys high school soccer, high school girls’ badminton, high school strength and conditioning and middle school girls’ basketball.
“Every day when my players come to practice or games, I expect them to be the best person they can be. I expect that they work hard to develop their skills and understanding of the game. If they have questions I want them to ask myself and their teammates. I expect that the girls work together to help each other improve, but I also want them to have fun. They should love the game.”
In the weeks that coach Kellner has worked with the girls, she has seen them develop an amazing sense of pride as a team, making sure that everyone understands the drills.
As the season continues, Kellner will strive to create a positive team environment and to grow as players and people. “We are one team and all of us need to treat one another with respect.”
Senior Captain Breegan McClish is a great leader, a scrappy player who works to get to every pass and is a strong hitter and blocker for the team.
Captains Lily Lindstrom and Sydney Nation have strong serves this year which will lead to many aces. Freshmen Skylee Barry, Taylor Bradley, Fiona Higgins and Mia Milwicz-Clanton are learning and improving each time they play and will become the backbone of the team in the next few years.
New members of the team are sophomore Suzy Barnwell, junior and captain Ellie Brewer and senior Mattea Beachy, all great additions to the Ned family volleyball players.
