As of June 30, 2021, PaintCare, the nonprofit organization set up by paint manufacturers to operate paint recycling programs, will have collected more than 50 million gallons of leftover paint from American households and businesses since its inception in 2009. That’s enough to repaint Coors Field with about 17,310 coats of paint, or more importantly, how much paint the PaintCare program has been able to divert from the waste stream for recycling and other uses.
This milestone is significant because it highlights a producer-led sustainability program that successfully collaborated with paint retailers, household hazardous waste facilities, and regional organizations to bring a much-needed recycling service to the community.
Over the past 10 years, PaintCare has grown to operate in California, Colorado, Connecticut, the District of Columbia, Maine, Minnesota, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Washington with a new program to begin in New York in 2022. PaintCare set up a network of more than 2,000 drop-off sites across its state programs, most at paint and hardware retail stores. In addition, PaintCare managed paint from more than 5,840 collection events.
In Colorado, more than four million gallons of paint have been collected since the program was established in July 2015. Currently, there are 183 year-round drop-off sites in the state.
