to know
the teachings of the trees
repeat the word “stillness”
aloud to yourself
ten thousand times
and then remember
they have stood
ten thousand times
longer than that
to learn the teachings
of the mountains
repeat stillness
a few million times
maybe forever
for perhaps wisdom
can be measured
by how long something
can stay in place
can sit without moving
can be in constant meditation
if this is the case
the trees
and the mountains
are the wisest things on earth
how lucky are we
to live at their feet
oh that we all took time
to sit beneath them and listen
