Omayra Acevedo has been writing for The Mountain-Ear for three and a half years. She takes us to different destinations around Colorado in her column “Discover Colorado.” Sometimes she takes us on a hike. Sometimes she takes us to a brewery or a great place to eat. No matter where it is, you know it will be in Colorado and you know Omayra will be passionate about it. She uses her photos and her words to take us on a journey.

Born in Puerto Rico, Omayra came to the States when she was five years old. She learned English as a youngster and is beautifully bilingual today.

Omayra has lived in Europe, spending time in Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium. While in Europe she worked as a writer and a fitness trainer.

Omayra is a self proclaimed outdoor addict. She loves hiking, camping, snowshoeing and running. Fitness is something she is passionate about. It can be outdoors or indoors. She knows it is invaluable for the mind and the body. Omayra also practices yoga as well as meditation.

Something you might not know about Omayra is that she is an accomplished artist. She paints (oil on canvas) as well as creates recycled art. Her art often reflects her love for the state of Colorado.

If you read “Discover Colorado” you know Omayra’s passion for travelling. In the not too distant future she hopes to travel to Alaska and to as many National Parks in the United States as she can. Omayra would also love to travel to New Zealand and Greece someday. All the while, she will continue her love of writing, journaling and photography while she travels.

As Omayra writes for The Mountain-Ear and carries on with her painting and creating she is also writing a book about Colorado. It will be a coffee table book with many photos and stories of her adventures around the state of Colorado.

Omayra also is attending Southern New Hampshire University online, earning her Master’s degree in creative writing and English literature.

Omayra’s creative spirit comes through with her words, her photography, her paintbrush and her works of art. We all learn a little bit more about Colorado each time she shares some of that creative spirit with us when she writes about one of her adventures in Colorado. Muchas gracias, mi amiga.
