October 2022: Precipitation was so minimal that this October was one of the drier Octobers in the climate data records. Liquid water was less than a half an inch with only 5 inches of snow. As the month ended we only had a trace to a couple of inches of snow on the ground. Temperatures were generally mild until the last week of the month as the westerly storm track started to open up. Pretty much a dull month with only a few windy days.
Temperature: In the first three weeks highs were in the 50s and 60s. At week four cooler Pacific air moved in dropping the temperatures into values more typical of fall. The mean high temperature was 53F with an average low of 32F. These combined to make the month 1 degree above normal. Highest temperature of the month was 63F on the 20th, lowest high was 36F on the 27th. Lowest low was 22F on the 24th.
Precipitation: A bad month for snow lovers with only 5.5 inches for the month. Liquid precipitation totaled a paltry 0.48 inches. Normals are 1.26inches and 11.6 inches, respectively. Only significant event was on the 26th to the 28th where all the snow occurred.
Winds: About normal for winds with 6 windy (40mph +) days. Peak wind was 45 mph on the 11th. Other Features: Stagnant west to east flow prevented any major storms until the last week of the month.
Outlook for November : Things get more winter-like in November with daily highs of 42F and lows of 21F. Temperatures below zero are observed in some Novembers. 30% of the month are windy days. Snow cranks up with 18 inches common. The long-range models are indicating a major event from the 4th to the 6th, turning dry, cooler and windy for the next two weeks. In the remainder of the month look for normal temperatures and precipitation.
