Obituary—Shirley Filer
Shirley Faye Filer, of Nederland, passed away Sunday, February 2, 2014, after a decade-long struggle with COPD. She was 81.
Mrs. Filer was born October 21, 1932, in Stanislaus County, California, to Wayne and Anna Mae Nutcher. She married Jack Filer on June 18, 1955, in San Jose, California.
She graduated from Turlock High School and was employed as a bookkeeper in Turlock and San Jose. She raised Holstein calves on the family farm and assisted in the family auto wrecking business before moving to Nederland in 1994.
Mrs. Filer was a baseball fan (Giants and Rockies) and a basketball fan (Nuggets) and attended spring training baseball games in Arizona for 18 years. She was a volunteer at the Nederland Visitors Center and the local food bank. She was a member of the Nederland Community Presbyterian Church and the Nederland Area Seniors.
She and Jack were featured in a chapter of Nederland author Burt Rashbaum's book, A Century of Love.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a daughter, Lois, and a son, Scott.
Survivors include her husband, Jack; a son, Steve (Carol); and granddaughters Alyss, Elaine Vardamis (Dan), Rose, and Lila; sisters Betty Dutey, WilmaLarson (Dean), Dorothy Blomquist, and JoAnna Jameson (Ben); sister-in-law Shirley Filer, and fourteen nieces and nephews.
A service will be held at Nederland Community Presbyterian Church on Sunday, February 9, 2014, at 5:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations could be made to the Nederland Community Presbyterian Church or Nederland Area Seniors.
