Dear Editor,
Annexations to Nederland must go to a vote of the citizens unless it meets one of several exemptions, such as being less than 10 acres. Land owned by Nederland is also exempt. Was it really the intent to allow the automatic annexation of the ski area - an annexation of 400+ acres almost three miles away?
The regulations also state “The Board of Trustees has the authority to determine whether these exemptions apply to an annexation.” So the BoT could place the ski area annexation on the ballot.
This will be the most important annexation Nederland ever undertakes. More than likely it will change the future direction of the town - maybe good, maybe bad, or something in the middle.
It seems like good public policy to have the citizens weigh in through a vote on something this significant to the town's future.
