On Tuesday and Wednesday, March 15 and 16, Nederland Middle-Senior High school music programs, led by directors Christine Mallory and Elizabeth Evans, put on an excellent pair of spring concerts.
The band and orchestra groups, which played on Tuesday, performed well with a diverse selection of arrangements. Leading with the explosive song “Burst!” by Brian Balmages, the Middle School Orchestra opened for a night of great music.
The High School Orchestra performed skillfully as well, with light, bounding songs like “Moon Bass” by Todd Parish, and more traditional pieces such as the classic piece “Beach Spring” arranged by Deborah Baker Monday. The orchestra ended by showing off their impressive cellists with George Philipp Telemann’s “Canonic Sonata No. 1.”
Next, the High School and Middle School bands played a collection of exciting songs. High School Band played pieces such as “Catapult” by Ed Huckaby, and everybody’s favorite, “Bohemian Rhapsody,” by Freddie Mercury. Both Middle and High School bands joined together to perform “Courtland Hills” by Roland Barrett as a combined band.
The Middle and High-School choirs performed the next night, Wednesday. Along with the wide range of choral pieces, NMSHS also saw talent from 14 dinner theatre performers. Singers like Kyle King, Blue Garcia-Paine, and the trio of Laila Waldron, Aya Pelkum Donahue, and Amelie Bodnar, as well as many other equally talented students who prepared talent pieces on their own to present for the dinner theater.
After these students had performed, the choral groups of the Loquations, Altitunes, Treble Makers, and High School Festival Choir rotated through song and dance arrangements. The Loquations sang songs such as David Bowie’s “Life on Mars” and Alt-J’s “Ripe and Ruin” arranged by the Loquations student, Noah Turner.
For the spring concert, the Altitunes, Treble Makers and Festival Choir all sang accompanied with lively dance arrangements cooreographed by the choirs themselves. Festival choir danced with songs from La-La Land, The Altitunes danced and sang to American rock classics from the 50s and 70s, and the Treble Makers twisted and shouted to Love is all You Need: A Tribute to the Beatles.
Both Concerts highlighted the exceptional musical talent at NMSHS from both the directors and their amazing students. Be sure to attend their last concerts of the 2022 school year, on Tuesday, May 10, and Wednesday, May 11, to see the community’s wonderful musicians.
