Nederland Middle-Senior High School’s auditorium came alive on December 6, 2023, as families gathered to support the talented musicians during the annual Winter Concert. The festive event, beginning at 6 p.m., showcased the remarkable skills of both the orchestra and band.
The High School Orchestra, led by Music Director Christine Mallery, kicked off the evening with a challenging piece titled “Atishbaji (Fireworks)” by Doug Spata. The audience was then treated to a rendition of “Paint It Black” by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards of The Rolling Stones.
Ms. Mallery shared the exciting news that middle school students took on “challenge pieces” – “Paint it Black” for the orchestra and “Sax Attack!” for the band. The 7th and 8th graders worked diligently to seamlessly join their high school counterparts for these performances.
Notably, the Winter Concert marked the debut for 5th grade students, who, after a dedicated practice session the day before the event, showcased their musical talents with the 6th grade groups. The Nederland Elementary students wowed the audience with renditions of “Hot Cross Buns” and “We Will Rock You.”
The 6th Grade Orchestra’s performance of “Mystic Caravan” composed by Soon Hee Newbold captivated the audience before the end of the orchestra performance. The Middle Level Orchestra and High School Orchestra united for a stunning rendition of “Grand Finale” composed by Richard Meyer.
At 7 p.m., the spotlight shifted to the band segment, opening with the dynamic “Sax Attack!” by David Shaffer, accompanied by Middle Level band guests. The concert took a playful turn with Hazel Kelly’s entrance in a fuzzy green Grinch onesie during “You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch,” sparking laughter and applause.
Director Liz Evans fervently conducted the music, alongside Ryan Brawders and Christine Mallery.
Adding a festive touch, the band treated the audience to “Santa Baby” by Joan Javits, Phillip Springer, and Tony Springer, spreading holiday cheer. The night concluded with the Middle Level and High School Band’s performance of “Clarinets Packing Up Early,” earning a welldeserved round of applause for the young, talented musicians.
The NMSHS Winter Concert was not just a showcase of student talent, but a celebration of dedication, hard work, and the joy of bringing music to the community.
