Barbara Lawlor, Nederland.   Last year, there was no Nederland High School girls’ basketball team because of dwindling numbers; this year, a bunch of determined young women and their coach have committed themselves to not letting the program die. Although they are not entering the regular league competition, they will be sending the team to play other schools’ junior varsity teams.

No home games are scheduled because a team with only five players is often subject to canceling the game and the coaches felt it would be at least inconvenient, to have trips scheduled to Nederland, only to have to be postponed.

The six girls who signed up for the season will become a hybrid team, created to help build a successful program and keep girls basketball moving forward. Chloe Lindstrom, junior, Karen Sorokach, sophomore, Avy Henrikson, freshman, Linnaea Thibedeau, sophomore, Eden McCollom and Breegan McLish will work with the Nederland Middle School, constructing a feeder program which will also host camps at the elementary school level. Nederland Middle School High School athletic director Emmy Murphy says, “This is a way to jump start a successful Lady Panthers team, to move forward.”

Last week, the girls attended practice and were eager to begin developing their skills so they could pass them onto upcoming players that will form NHS’s girls basketball program.
