Last day farewells: It is a longstanding tradition at Nederland Elementary School (NES) to give the fifth graders a grand exit when they leave the school on the last day of the school year. It symbolizes the joyful years they have had at NES and now the school wishes them well on their journey. All the students and staff line the winding ramp and chant “Fifth grade” until the class appears. Then everyone cheers, very loudly, and the fifth graders give hugs and high fives as they walk down the ramp. Many parents are waiting at the bottom watching the spectacle and waiting to hug their kids. Then the NES staff goes to the buses to wave goodbye to the students. Buses honk and everyone is waving goodbye. This is when the German Auf Wiedersehen seems to be most appropriate...until we meet again. PHOTO BY SARA SANDSTROM[/caption]
