NEDERLAND - The preschoolers in Nederland Elementary’s Preschool Enrichment Program are studying feelings, and how important it is to have a “full bucket” and help fill other people’s buckets. We do this by using kind words and actions and being helpful, because it is important to care for others.
This is based on the book Have You Filled a Bucket Today? by Carol McCloud.
Presented with trays filled with heart stickers, foam hearts, pipe cleaners, felt hearts, sticker gems, and pom-poms, the kids went to work making bookmarks. Later, they were going to make heart creatures, and even a jewelry dish.
The morning and afternoon classes were busy with their Valentine crafts: sticking, gluing, and cutting (important skills that they are learning at this age). They were creating!
Preschool Enrichment teacher Jessa Meyers planned this lesson with community in mind. Meyers wanted to connect with the seniors in the Nederland community and teach her students the joys of filling people’s buckets.
At the Nederland Area Seniors Valentine Lunch, Meyers presented the students’ bookmarks to the seniors—gifts to them from the preschoolers. Although they could not meet each other face-to-face, the preschoolers hope their gift is received in community, kindness, and love.
The preschoolers took their task seriously and worked hard on it, a beautiful gesture that crossed generations.
