Ned’s Mountain Bike team grabs third at Regionals

FRUITA - The Nederland High School Mountain Bike team competed in their final regular season race in Fruita this past weekend, enjoying the flowy twists and turns that made this part of Colorado famous for its spectacular mountain biking. While the trails were dusty and the sun was hot, the team fought hard and each rider showed grit and heart. 

There was a “senior send-off” parade for the Legacy Riders–those who raced all four years of high school. Our two varsity riders, Laila Waldron and Grayson Shurr, were awarded with commemorative belt buckles. 

Senior Laila Waldron took fourth place in the varsity girls’ race and fifth place in overall points for the season in regionals, and sophomore Amika Begin captured fourth place in regionals. Freshman Jonny Moss moved up another ten spots to get 19th, despite feeling sick throughout the race. Senior Grayson Shurr dodged crashes in the varsity boys’ race to nail down 18th. And seventh grader Nora Shurr, who has won all of the season’s Yeti Skills Courses, made it a clean sweep by winning again in Fruita.

The Nederland team took home third place in the race for Division Two as well as overall for regionals. Eight riders will be headed to State: Laila Waldron, Grayson Shurr, Finn Fitzer, Halle Peiffer, Amika Begin, Madeline Perry, Cody Waldron, and Jonathan Moss.

State Championships will be held in Glenwood Springs on October 19 and 20.
