Brakes failed on pickup towing a trailer, according to Colorado State Patrol

BOULDER COUNTY — A 37-year-old woman from Nederland was killed in a car accident on Wednesday evening, July 15, 2026. A pickup truck towing a trailer heading eastbound down the hill lost its brakes on Colorado Highway 119, according to the Colorado State Patrol.

The crash happened at about 6:30 p.m. near mile marker 34. The highway remained closed overnight between mileposts 30 and 37 before reopening around 4:15 a.m. Thursday.

Investigators said a Dodge Ram pulling a trailer was traveling eastbound when its brakes failed. The trailer began rotating into the westbound lane, where it struck the driver's side of a Toyota Sienna. The pickup continued eastbound, and the trailer then hit the front of a Hyundai Ioniq.

After the second collision, the trailer rolled, causing the pickup to roll onto its driver's side.

The Toyota Sienna left the roadway, struck large rocks and a mailbox, and came to rest off the highway. The Hyundai was pushed into a rock embankment.

The driver of the Hyundai, a 37-year-old woman from Nederland, was pronounced dead at the scene. Her identity has not yet been released pending notification of next of kin by the Boulder County Coroner's Office.

The driver of the Toyota Sienna, a 22-year-old man from Ward, was taken to an area hospital with moderate injuries.

The driver of the Dodge Ram, a 27-year-old man from Thornton, was not injured.

The Colorado State Patrol's Vehicular Crimes Unit is investigating the crash. Anyone who witnessed the collision or has information but has not yet spoken with investigators is asked to contact Colorado State Patrol Dispatch at 303-239-4501 and reference case VC260232.

This is a developing story. The Mountain-Ear will update the article with details and the identity of the victim as soon as it is released.
